Description
This butter board appetizer is a show-stopping, customizable party starter featuring whipped butter, fresh herbs, crunchy seeds, and sweet or savory toppings. It’s quick to assemble, visually stunning, and perfect for gatherings of any size.
Ingredients
- 1 cup (2 sticks, 225g) unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1–2 teaspoons flaky sea salt
- 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
- Zest of 1 lemon
- 1 tablespoon honey or hot honey (optional)
- 2–3 roasted garlic cloves, smashed (or raw garlic, finely minced)
- 2 tablespoons fresh herbs, chopped (parsley, dill, chives, or thyme)
- 2 tablespoons toasted seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, or sesame)
- 1 tablespoon dried fruit (chopped apricots, cranberries, or figs)
- 1 tablespoon pomegranate seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes (optional)
- Edible flowers (optional)
- 1 rustic baguette, sliced and toasted (or sourdough, rye, or gluten-free crackers)
- Assorted crackers, breadsticks, or veggie sticks
Instructions
- Place the unsalted butter in a mixing bowl. For extra fluffiness, whip with olive oil using a hand mixer until light and airy (about 1-2 minutes).
- Mix in flaky sea salt and lemon zest. Taste and adjust salt as needed. Swirl in honey or hot honey if desired.
- Spoon the butter onto a board or platter. Use an offset spatula, butter knife, or back of a spoon to create swoops and swirls, forming a thick, even layer.
- Scatter roasted garlic, chopped fresh herbs, and toasted seeds over the butter. Add dried fruit, pomegranate seeds, chili flakes, and edible flowers as desired.
- Slice the baguette into 1/2-inch slices. Toast in the oven at 400°F for 5 minutes, or until golden and crisp. Optionally, brush with olive oil before toasting.
- Arrange the butter board in the center of your table, surrounded by bread, crackers, and veggie sticks. Serve immediately, letting guests scoop and build their own bites.
Notes
Let butter come to room temperature for easy spreading. For dairy-free, use plant-based butter. For gluten-free, serve with seed crackers or veggie sticks. Add delicate toppings like herbs or edible flowers just before serving. Assemble right before guests arrive for best texture.
