Creamy Custard Toast

  • Author: neuriox
  • Total Time: 22 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

This creamy crispy custard toast combines golden, crunchy bread with a silky, vanilla-scented custard center for a breakfast that feels like a cross between French toast and crème brûlée. It’s quick, easy, and endlessly customizable with your favorite toppings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices thick-cut white bread or brioche (about 1-inch thick, day-old preferred)
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup whole milk (or 2%, oat milk, or almond milk for dairy-free)
  • 2 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt or softened cream cheese
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (plus extra for sprinkling, or use coconut sugar/maple syrup)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Toppings of choice: fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries), banana slices, chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate, honey or maple syrup, powdered sugar, chopped nuts (almonds, pecan…

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Gather 4 slices of thick-cut bread. If bread is fresh, let it sit out for 10 minutes or lightly toast it.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, Greek yogurt (or cream cheese), sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until completely smooth.
  4. Using the back of a spoon, gently press the center of each bread slice to create a shallow well.
  5. Spoon 2-3 tablespoons of custard mixture into the well of each bread slice.
  6. Add your favorite toppings (berries, banana, chocolate chips, etc.) and sprinkle a little extra sugar on top if desired.
  7. Bake for 10–12 minutes, until custard is just set and bread is golden and crispy at the edges. For extra crispiness, broil for 1–2 minutes at the end, watching closely.
  8. Let the toast cool for 1–2 minutes to finish setting. Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with honey/maple syrup and serve warm.

Notes

Use day-old or lightly toasted bread for best texture. Don’t overfill with custard to avoid soggy toast. For dairy-free, use plant-based milk and yogurt. For gluten-free, use sturdy gluten-free bread. Mix custard the night before for a quick morning assembly. Broil briefly for caramelized tops, but watch closely to avoid burning.
