Description
Tender slices of potatoes layered with a rich, velvety sauce and topped with golden, bubbly cheese make this dish a comforting and crowd-pleasing side for any occasion.
Ingredients
- Russet potatoes, peeled and sliced thinly
- Unsalted butter
- All-purpose flour
- Whole milk
- Heavy cream
- Garlic, minced or grated
- Onion, finely chopped or grated
- Shredded cheddar cheese (or Gruyere, or a blend)
- Salt
- Pepper
- Nutmeg (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease your baking dish lightly with butter or cooking spray.
- Peel the potatoes and slice them into thin rounds (about 1/8-inch thick). Set them aside.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped onion, cooking until fragrant and softened, about 2-3 minutes.
- Whisk in the flour until it forms a paste, cooking for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
- Gradually pour in the milk and heavy cream, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring until it thickens slightly.
- Add half of the shredded cheese, stirring until melted and smooth. Season with salt, pepper, and a tiny pinch of nutmeg (if using). Remove from heat.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish, slightly overlapping. Pour half of the sauce over the potatoes, spreading it evenly.
- Repeat with the remaining potatoes and sauce. Sprinkle the rest of the shredded cheese on top.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes or until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Let the dish cool for 5-10 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to set.
Notes
Use Russet potatoes for the best texture and flavor. Let the dish rest before serving to allow the sauce to thicken. Customize with different cheeses or add-ins like bacon or herbs.
