A quick and easy recipe for crispy mozzarella sticks with a golden crunchy coating and gooey melted cheese inside, perfect for snacks or gatherings.

- 12 ounces (340 grams) block of mozzarella cheese, firm and cold
- 1 cup (120 grams) all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 2 cups (200 grams) Italian-style breadcrumbs or panko
- 1/4 cup (25 grams) grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasoning (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- Vegetable oil or canola oil for frying (about 2-3 cups or enough to fill a deep pan 2 inches deep)
Instructions
- Slice the block of mozzarella into sticks about 3 inches (7.5 cm) long and 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) thick. Place on a parchment-lined tray and freeze for at least 30 minutes.
- Prepare three shallow bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with breadcrumb mixture (breadcrumbs, Parmesan, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt, and pepper mixed together).
- Remove mozzarella sticks from freezer. Dredge each stick in flour, shaking off excess, then dip into beaten eggs, letting excess drip off, and coat thoroughly with breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently.
- Repeat the egg and breadcrumb coating a second time for a double coat.
- Place coated sticks back on parchment and freeze again for at least 30 minutes.
- Heat oil in a deep frying pan to about 2 inches deep over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- Fry mozzarella sticks in small batches for 1-2 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove sticks with tongs or slotted spoon and drain on a wire rack or paper towels.
- Serve immediately for best crispy and gooey experience.
Notes
Freeze mozzarella sticks before frying to prevent cheese from leaking. Double coat with egg and breadcrumbs for extra crunch and to seal cheese inside. Fry at 350°F (175°C) and avoid overcrowding the pan. Drain on wire rack to keep crispy. Reheat in oven to restore crispiness; avoid microwave.
