  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon (7 ml) honey or maple syrup (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon (2.5 ml) vanilla extract (optional)
  • Small handful of mini fruit bits or berries (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, combine 1 cup (240 ml) of unsweetened applesauce with 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of lemon juice. Stir gently to blend.
  2. Sprinkle in ¼ teaspoon cinnamon, ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, and 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup if using. Whisk gently until everything is evenly mixed. Fold in mini fruit bits if using.
  3. Spoon the mixture into silicone ice cube trays or small molds, filling each cavity about three-quarters full.
  4. Place the trays flat in the freezer and freeze for at least 3-4 hours or overnight until firm but easy to bite.
  5. Pop the frozen applesauce cubes out and serve immediately or store in an airtight container or freezer bag.

Notes

Use unsweetened applesauce for best texture and flavor. Do not overfill molds to prevent sticking. Lemon juice prevents browning. Let frozen cubes sit at room temperature for a few minutes if too hard. Customize with cinnamon, vanilla, honey, or fruit bits as desired.
