Easy Ham and Swiss Croissant Breakfast Casserole Recipe for Overnight Success

  • Author: Lena
  • Total Time: 6 hours 55 minutes to overnight (including soaking time)
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

A comforting and easy-to-make breakfast casserole featuring buttery croissants, savory ham, and melty Swiss cheese soaked overnight in a creamy custard. Perfect for busy mornings and brunches.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large butter croissants (day-old or slightly stale)
  • 8 ounces deli ham, chopped (thick-cut)
  • 1 ½ cups shredded Swiss cheese (about 150 grams)
  • 6 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 cups whole milk (480 ml)
  • ½ cup heavy cream (120 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme or dried herbs (optional)

Instructions

  1. Tear or slice the croissants into roughly 2-inch pieces and place evenly in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Scatter the chopped deli ham evenly over the croissants, then sprinkle the shredded Swiss cheese on top.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, whole milk, and heavy cream until fully combined. Stir in Dijon mustard (if using), salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and thyme or dried herbs.
  4. Slowly pour the custard mixture evenly over the croissants, ham, and cheese. Press down gently to help the croissants soak up the custard.
  5. Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate for at least 6 hours or overnight.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the cover and bake the casserole for 45-50 minutes until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the casserole cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Use day-old croissants to prevent sogginess. Cover casserole tightly while refrigerating overnight to avoid drying out. Room temperature eggs and milk help custard mix evenly. Tent foil over casserole if top browns too quickly during baking. Variations include vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, and spicy twists.
