Instructions
- Prep all ingredients: Bring cream cheese and butter to room temperature. Wash and dry veggies, herbs, and edible flowers. Slice cucumbers, radishes, and other veggies thinly. Prepare egg, ham, or chicken salad in separate bowls and season to taste.
- Trim and cut bread: Stack 2-3 slices of bread and use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out hearts. Save crusts for breadcrumbs or croutons.
- Assemble sandwiches: Spread a thin layer of butter or cream cheese on the bottom slice. Add chosen fillings (cucumber, smoked salmon, turkey, salads, jam, etc.), then top with herbs, microgreens, or radishes. Place the second bread heart on top and press gently.
- Tidy sandwiches: Press gently to seal. Wipe off excess filling with a damp paper towel. Trim edges with the cutter if needed.
- Arrange the board: Place largest sandwiches in a spiral or heart shape on a serving board. Fill gaps with mini sandwiches, edible flowers, or microgreens. Scatter extra veggies and herbs for color. Add strawberries or candies for fun.
- Final touches: Sprinkle flaky sea salt and pepper on savory sandwiches. Dust sweet sandwiches with powdered sugar or top with a berry half. Serve and enjoy!
Notes
For best results, use day-old bread for easier cutting. Pat veggies dry to prevent sogginess. Assemble sandwiches close to serving time and cover with a damp towel to keep fresh. Easily adapt for gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegan diets by swapping bread and fillings. Get creative with fillings and presentation—alternate bread colors and add edible flowers for a festive look.
