Description
This recipe delivers juicy, flavorful grilled turkey burgers with fresh herbs and toppings, perfect for quick weeknight dinners or BBQs. The secret is a simple mix of grated onion and parsley to keep the patties moist and tender.
Ingredients
- 1 lb (450 g) ground turkey (lean, not extra-lean)
- 1 small onion, finely grated
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
- Crisp lettuce leaves (romaine or butter lettuce)
- 1 medium tomato, sliced
- Red onion slices (optional)
- Avocado slices (optional)
- Yogurt-based sauce (Greek yogurt mixed with lemon juice, salt, and a pinch of cumin)
- 4 burger buns (brioche or potato buns recommended)
Instructions
- Finely grate one small onion using a box grater or microplane. Let it sit a few minutes, then gently squeeze out excess liquid if very wet.
- In a large bowl, combine ground turkey, grated onion, chopped parsley, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, olive oil, and Worcestershire sauce if using. Mix gently but thoroughly with your hands, avoiding overmixing.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a round patty about 3/4 inch (2 cm) thick. Press a slight indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb.
- Preheat grill to medium-high heat (about 375°F / 190°C). Lightly oil the grill grates to prevent sticking.
- Place patties on the grill and cook for 5-6 minutes on the first side without pressing down, until nicely charred. Flip carefully and grill the other side for another 5-6 minutes. Use a meat thermometer to ensure internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
- While burgers cook, split and toast the buns lightly on the grill or in a pan until golden and slightly crisp.
- Assemble burgers by spreading yogurt sauce on the bottom bun, adding a lettuce leaf, then the turkey patty. Top with tomato slices, red onion, avocado if using, and the top bun.
- Serve immediately while hot and juicy.
Notes
Do not overmix the meat to keep burgers tender. Press a small dimple in the center of each patty to prevent puffing up. Use a meat thermometer to ensure burgers reach 165°F (74°C) for safety. Let burgers rest 3-5 minutes after grilling to redistribute juices. For gluten-free, use lettuce wraps or gluten-free buns. For dairy-free sauce, substitute Greek yogurt with coconut yogurt.
